Bamboo Tree Splicing Project Thing:
By: Emilie Claire Schneider, Archer Leida, Ingrid Borgesen, Yazeed Hamami, Austin Marshall, and Griffin Leland
Unmet need:
All over the world pollution continues to be a growing threat to the health of the population. In places such as Indonesia and China, people are forced to wear face masks in order to remain safe. A quick solution to this problem would be to plant more oxygen producing plants such as trees. Unfortunately, trees take years to grow. Our project could change the rate at which trees grow.
Project Idea:
Our idea is to combine the DNA of a bamboo plant with the DNA of a high oxygen producing plant such as the Conifer. This would create a faster growing and more resilient tree that would produce large amounts of Oxygen in a polluted area. Since Bamboo plants can virtually grow anywhere, this makes it the ideal plant to combine with the Conifer tree.
Materials: Bamboo growth genes, Conifer tree saplings, Petri Dishes,
Facilities: a lab where we could combine the DNA and grow the seedlings
